Best Restaurants in Canggu & Umalas: Where to Eat in Bali's Most Vibrant Neighborhood
Why Canggu and Umalas?
Of all Bali's neighborhoods, Canggu and Umalas have quietly become the island's most interesting area to eat. Not the most touristy — that's still Seminyak. Not the most traditional — that's Ubud. But for the combination of quality, variety, and atmosphere, this stretch of the island is hard to beat.
It's where expats live, where long-stay travellers end up, and where new restaurants open with something genuinely worth trying.
Here's what the area has to offer.
For an immersive dining experience unlike anything else
If you're looking for somewhere that stands apart from Bali's standard restaurant scene, Ju Bali is the place to know. It's a full all-day destination — open from 8am to midnight — built around an open-fire grill kitchen, tropical greenery, soft ambient lighting, and the island's first and only outdoor jacuzzi zone integrated into a restaurant.
The food is centred on the grill: meats, fresh fish, seafood, cooked over open flame in a kitchen you can watch from your table. But what makes Ju Bali worth knowing about isn't just the food — it's the atmosphere. Immersive, unhurried, and genuinely unlike anything else in the area.
It works for breakfast, a slow lunch, sunset drinks, or a late dinner. One of the rare places in Bali where there's no wrong time to show up.
For authentic local food
Warungs in the backstreets of Canggu still serve some of the best value meals on the island. Nasi campur, mie goreng, and fresh grilled fish at prices that haven't moved in years. The further you get from the main strip, the more authentic — and affordable — it gets.
Ask locals rather than searching online. The best warungs rarely have a strong web presence.
For coffee and slow mornings
Canggu has more speciality coffee spots per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Southeast Asia. The neighbourhood runs on flat whites and iced matcha. Most open early, work well for laptops, and are genuinely good at what they do.
Ju Bali also runs breakfast from 8am — worth knowing if you want coffee and a proper grill-cooked morning meal rather than another smoothie bowl.
For a big group or a special occasion
Canggu and Umalas have a handful of spots that work well for groups — but most either feel too loud, too cramped, or too obviously set up for tourists.
Ju Bali handles groups particularly well. The outdoor space, the jacuzzi zone, and the open kitchen create a natural energy that works for birthdays, group dinners, and any occasion where you want the evening to feel like something more than just a meal.
A few things worth knowing about eating in Canggu
- Traffic in Canggu is genuinely bad, especially 6–9pm. Plan your journey or walk if you're staying nearby.
- Most of the best restaurants don't take reservations — arrive early for dinner or expect to wait.
- The area skews towards Western and fusion food. For traditional Balinese cuisine, head slightly further inland.
The short answer
Canggu and Umalas have more good restaurants than anywhere else on the island right now. If you only have time for one place that captures what makes the area worth visiting — the atmosphere, the food, the sense that you're somewhere genuinely special — Ju Bali is the one to try first.
